Field Day Planning Guide: 12 Station Ideas That Run Themselves
On this page
A great field day is a logistics problem disguised as a party. The formula that works: stations that explain themselves, rotations timed by one whistle, and volunteers who only have to count and cheer. Here are twelve stations plus the math to run them.
The rotation math
Divide total students by 10 to get your station count, then add one buffer station. A 120-kid grade needs 12 stations of 10. Eight minutes per station plus two minutes of travel means a 12-station day runs two hours. Mark each station with a numbered cone and give each class a rotation card. That is the entire system.
Classic race stations
1. Hurdle relay
Teams shuttle over a line of 6 inch hurdles, tag the next runner. Set 12 inches for fifth graders.
2. Slalom dribble
Soccer dribble through a cone slalom, around the end cone, back. Bonus: a hand-dribble basketball version on blacktop.
3. Speed chute sprints
The spectacle station. Kids take turns sprinting 20 yards with a speed chute. Every kid wants a second turn, which is how you know it works.
4. Bean bag shuttle
Sprint to a marker, grab a bean bag, return, repeat until your team's pile is moved. Pure running volume, zero skill barrier.
Accuracy stations
5. Target ladder toss
The 1-2-3 point bean bag target ladder. Volunteers just add scores.
6. Frisbee or ball to cone gates
Throw through cone gates at three distances. Three throws per kid, points by gate.
7. Reaction ball catch challenge
How many one-bounce reaction ball catches in 60 seconds? Personal-best format, no team pressure.
The crowd-pleasers
8. Parachute station
A 20 foot parachute with a volunteer who knows three games: popcorn, mushroom, cat and mouse. Details in the parachute games guide. This station gets the loudest, plan its location accordingly.
9. Tug of war
Mark the center line with a spot marker. Best of three, mixed teams. Eternal.
10. Water relay
Sponge over the head down a line into a bucket. Schedule it late in the day on purpose.
The quiet stations
11. Balance challenge
Bean bag on head through a spot marker hop path. A recovery station between sprint stations, by design.
12. Free play corner
Extra bean bags and markers, no rules, one volunteer. Every field day needs one pressure valve station.
Equipment checklist
For 12 stations: 40 cones, 2 spot marker sets, 2 bean bag sets, 6 hurdles, 2 speed chutes, reaction balls, 1 large parachute, plus pinnies to split teams at race stations. One order, one storage bin, reused every year. Schools can get the full field day kit at bulk pricing.
