15 Spot Marker Games for Elementary PE
On this page
Poly spots are the most underrated equipment in the PE closet. They solve the two hardest problems in elementary PE at once: where do I stand, and what do I do next. These fifteen games run on one or two sets of spot markers, sorted from kindergarten to fifth grade.
Management first: three tricks before any game
Home spots. Give every student a colored spot as their home base. Transitions stop costing you five minutes because everyone knows exactly where to return.
Color teams. Spots in four colors sort your class into four teams with zero arguments. Stand on red, you are red team.
Silent lineup. Lay numbered spots by the door. Students line up on their number. No pushing, no negotiating.
K to 2nd grade
1. Musical spots
Musical chairs without the bruises. Remove one spot each round. Losers become the DJ team, so nobody sits out bored.
2. Frog crossing
Spots are lily pads across the gym swamp. Frogs may only jump pad to pad. Vary the spacing so every crossing has an easy and a brave route.
3. Color hunt
Call a color and a movement: skip to yellow, crab walk to blue. Locomotor practice disguised as a scavenger hunt.
4. Alphabet islands
With A to Z letter spots, call a letter, students run to it. Spell short words for advanced rounds. Sneaks literacy into gym day and teachers love you for it.
5. Sleeping bears
Bears nap on their spots. When you call morning, bears roam with a movement you name. On night, last bear back to a spot picks the next movement.
3rd to 5th grade
6. Beanbag horseshoes
Pair each spot with a throwing line. Students toss bean bags to land on the spot. Three points on, one point touching.
7. Spot tag
Two taggers, everyone else safe only while standing on a spot, max five seconds per spot. Constant decisions about when to run.
8. Math dash
Numbered spots scattered. Call an equation, students race to the answer. The fastest correct foot wins the point.
9. Territory
Two teams, spots spread across both halves. On the whistle, steal one enemy spot at a time back to your half. Two minutes, count territory.
10. Hopscotch builder
Teams get eight spots to design their own hopscotch course, then rotate through every other team's design. Creativity plus repetition.
Stations and fitness
11. Station markers
One numbered spot anchors each fitness station. Students rotate on your signal. Spots make station boundaries obvious so you coach instead of police.
12. Plank touches
Plank position, four spots in reach. Call colors, students touch that spot without dropping the plank.
13. Agility compass
Four spots around each athlete: north, south, east, west. Call directions, they shuffle and return to center. Goalkeeper footwork for fourth graders.
14. Hands and feet course
Hand and feet markers in sequence: two feet, one hand, jump, land. Students read the floor like a movement puzzle. Also the single best tool for motor planning work.
15. The lava finale
Whole class crosses the gym, spots are the only safe ground, and you remove spots behind them as they go. Cooperation appears out of nowhere.
What to buy
One 12 pack of round spots runs most of these. Add letters, numbers, or the hands and feet set as your library grows, or grab the classroom combo. For the rest of the PE kit, see the complete equipment guide.
