How to Plan a 60-Minute Youth Soccer Practice (Free Template)

Volunteer coaches do not need more drills. They need a structure that works every week so the drills have somewhere to live. This is the 60-minute template used in some form by almost every good youth program: arrival activity, warm-up, one skill, one game that uses the skill, scrimmage. Steal it.

Before kids arrive: the 10-minute setup

Set up everything first. A practice that pauses to build the next drill loses the group. You need three areas:

  • Arrival box: a 15 by 15 yard square of cones, balls inside.
  • Skill area: whatever tonight's drill needs, gates, slalom, or a diamond.
  • Game field: small field with cone goals, pinnies in two colors waiting in two piles.

0 to 10 minutes: arrival activity

Kids arrive scattered over fifteen minutes. Never wait. Whoever shows up dribbles in the arrival box: tricks, tag with the ball, juggling attempts. The rule is one kid, one ball, moving. Practice has already started even when half the team is missing.

10 to 18 minutes: warm-up with the ball

No laps. Dribbling warm-ups do everything a jog does plus a hundred touches: red light green light for the little ones, gate dribbling counts for older groups. Our cone drills guide has six warm-ups sorted by age.

18 to 33 minutes: one skill, taught properly

One skill per practice. Not three. Demonstrate for thirty seconds, then maximize repetitions: if the skill is the inside cut, every kid cuts at a cone forty times in this block, not four. Use the cone diamond from the drills guide and rotate the turn you call.

33 to 48 minutes: a game that uses the skill

Now hide the repetitions in a game. Skill was cutting? Play gate wars, where dribbling through any gate scores and a defender forces the cut to happen under pressure. Pinnies on, score kept loudly. This block is where the skill becomes usable, and it is also the block most coaches skip. Do not skip it.

48 to 60 minutes: scrimmage

Small-sided, 3v3 or 4v4, cone goals, no goalkeepers under age 10. Small fields mean every kid touches the ball every minute, which is the entire developmental argument in one sentence. Referee less than you want to. Let them play.

The packing list

This entire structure runs on one bag: a 40 pack of mini cones, a 12 pack of pinnies in two colors, and a ball per player. Add mini hurdles once a month for a speed-themed session using these ten drills.
