12 Soccer Cone Drills for Youth Practice (U6 to U12)

GSI Team Jun 5, 2026 2 min read

Every drill below runs from a single 40 pack of mini cones, a set of pinnies, and a ball per kid where possible. They are ordered youngest to oldest, and each one states the setup in one line so you can build it before practice starts.

U6 to U8: chaos with a purpose

1. Red light, green light dribble

Scatter cones as obstacles. Kids dribble on green, freeze the ball on red. Sneaks ball control into a game they already know.

2. Cone knockdown

Stand 10 cones up, split kids into two teams: one knocks cones over with passes, the other stands them up. Ninety seconds, count, swap.

3. Treasure chest

Pile cones in the center, one home base per kid in the corners. Kids dribble in, take one cone, dribble back. Most cones wins. Pure touches, zero queues.

4. Color call

Spread all four cone colors. Call a color, everyone dribbles to the nearest cone of that color. Builds scanning while they dribble, which is the actual skill.

U8 to U10: gates and slaloms

5. Gate dribbling

Pairs of cones make gates, two yards wide, fifteen gates across the area. Kids count gates dribbled through in two minutes, then try to beat their score.

6. Slalom relay

Two lines of six cones, two teams. Through the slalom, around the end cone, back. Make them carry the ball both ways or it becomes a running race.

7. Four corner passing

A cone square, ten yards per side, one player per corner plus one spare. Pass and follow your pass. Add a second ball when it gets easy.

8. Traffic jam

Everyone dribbles inside a cone box that you slowly shrink by moving cones in. Heads come up or collisions happen. Self-correcting.

U10 to U12: speed and decisions

9. Y slalom

Cones form a Y. Players attack the stem, you call left or right at the fork. Cutting at speed on command.

10. Gate wars

Gate dribbling, but in pinnies and in pairs: attacker scores by dribbling any gate, defender wins the ball to switch roles. Two minute rounds. Use pinnies so roles are obvious.

11. Diamond turns

A diamond of four cones, five yards apart. Player dribbles to each cone and performs the turn you name: inside cut, outside cut, pullback. Three rounds, three turns.

12. The gauntlet

One long channel of paired cones with two defenders inside. Attackers run it one at a time. End every practice with it and they will beg for one more go.

The kit that runs all twelve

One 40 pack of mini cones covers every setup above. Add a 12 pack of pinnies for the team games and spot markers if you coach indoors where cones slide. For the full equipment checklist by age group, read the complete setup guide.
