Parachute and Bean Bag Birthday Party Games: A 90-Minute Plan
On this page
An active birthday party needs exactly two things: games that include everyone at once, and a plan so you are never standing in front of twelve sugared-up kids wondering what comes next. One play parachute and a set of bean bags cover the whole party. Here is the 90-minute script.
Before guests arrive
Lay the parachute out in the yard or living room (a 6 foot chute suits up to 6 kids, 12 foot for more). Scatter bean bags in a basket nearby. That is the entire setup, ten minutes including snack table.
0 to 15: arrival free play
Kids trickle in. Bean bag target practice runs itself: a hoop, a bucket, or a taped square, throw from wherever feels brave. No rules announced. Arrival activities beat waiting politely on a couch every time.
15 to 40: parachute block one
Big waves
Everyone grabs a handle, make the biggest waves possible. Thirty seconds of pure noise to burn the arrival energy.
Popcorn
Bean bags on the chute, shake until every one pops off. Then the reverse challenge: roll them all into the center hole or keep them on as long as possible.
Mushroom
Lift together on three, step in, pull the chute behind you and sit on the edge. Everyone is inside a glowing dome. Expect screaming. This is the moment that ends up on every parent's phone.
Cat and mouse
One child on top crawling (the cat), one underneath (the mouse), everyone else makes waves to hide the mouse. Rotate so each kid gets a turn at both jobs. Run the rotations and this single game fills fifteen minutes.
40 to 55: cake and presents
Scheduled in the middle on purpose: kids are tired enough to sit still, and you still have games left for the post-sugar surge.
55 to 80: game block two
Bean bag battleship
Two teams, two territories, hoops as ships, sink them with bean bag throws. Full rules in the bean bag games guide.
Parachute merry-go-round
Everyone holds with one hand, walk, then jog, in a circle. Call "switch!" to reverse. Add the birthday kid in the middle taking a bow.
The shark game
Kids sit with legs under the chute, one shark crawls below pulling feet, pulled kids become sharks. Save it for last; nothing tops it.
80 to 90: wind-down
Everyone under the floating chute one final time, then a calm game: pass a bean bag around the circle behind backs while music plays, holder when it stops does a dance move. Parents arrive to a tired, happy room.
The shopping list
One parachute sized to your guest count, one bean bag set, done. Both get reused for years of rainy days and family games, which is more than most party purchases can claim.
