Rainy Day Practice: 9 Indoor Drills for Small Spaces

GSI Team Jun 5, 2026 1 min read

Rain cancels the field, not the practice. The trick to indoor sessions is accepting what small spaces are good at: footwork, first touch, reactions, and competition, rather than trying to shrink a full scrimmage into a cafeteria. Nine activities, sorted by how much room you actually have.

Half a gym or a cafeteria

1. Foot skills circuit

Four stations with spot markers: toe taps on the ball, sole rolls between two dots, figure-eights around markers, juggling. Ninety seconds per station. Flat markers will not trip anyone on a hard floor, which is why they beat cones indoors.

2. Reaction ball stations

Hard floors are the best surface a reaction ball ever bounces on. Run wall rebounds and partner drops from the reaction drills guide. Ten minutes of this is a genuinely better hand-eye session than most field practices include all season.

3. Tight-space 1v1s

Cone gate goals 10 feet apart, 1v1 for 30 seconds, rotate. Small spaces force close control, and players who train in phone-booth conditions look unhurried on a full field later.

4. Passing windows

Pairs pass through a one-foot cone gate from increasing distance. Hard floor means true rolls, so this is secretly the best passing-accuracy environment you get all year.

5. Balance and footwork dots

Marker hop patterns: two-foot, single-leg, hopscotch mixes. Quiet enough for a classroom, hard enough for a 12 year old if you add a clap-and-catch on each landing.

6. Bean bag target practice

The target ladder and around-the-world games run in any room with ten feet of floor. Soft equipment, no broken lamps, real throwing mechanics.

7. Seated reaction catches

Athlete sits cross-legged, partner drops a reaction ball in front of them, catch before the second bounce. Removing the legs isolates pure hand speed, and it is doable next to a couch.

8. Hurdle and sprint circuit

Gyms fit a 3-hurdle line plus a 15 yard sprint comfortably. Run the 6 inch footwork drills from the hurdle guide; skip the 12 inch jumps unless the floor has give.

9. Three-team pinnie tournament

The three-team rotation from the small-sided games list is the perfect indoor finale: short games, winner stays, the resting team juggles. Pinnies in three colors make it run itself.

The rainy-day bag

Keep a dedicated indoor kit packed: flat spot markers, bean bags, reaction balls, pinnies. All soft or flat, all quiet, all legal on a wood floor. Then a cancelled field day takes five minutes to replan instead of becoming a movie day.
